One Color. One Breath. One Pause.
Designing an AI Powered Emotional Learning Experience for Children.
The Problem
The Digital Echo of Childhood
Childhood today glows on screens. The digital blue has replaced the bedtime lamp. As designers, we must ask: What happens when screens become the new playground?
Mental Health Challenges
Rising anxiety and stress in children. (CDC, 2023)
Focus Struggles
Shortened attention spans and digital distraction. (Vivomind Research, 2025)
Digital Burnout
Fatigue from constant screen exposure. (Parent Survey, 2025)
A Disrupted System
A child's well-being is interconnected when one piece shifts, everything feels it.

The Core Challenge
Social media, digital interaction, family, and school must stay in balance. When school disconnects, the whole system fractures.

When one piece breaks, the whole puzzle falls apart.
The Quiet Pain of Modern Childhood
The Late Night Struggle
A child whispers, "Just five more minutes." The digital pull is stronger than a bedtime story.

The Parent's Dilemma
A parent stands at the door unsure whether to offer comfort or correction. Two worlds, emotionally far apart.
The Research
Where the Puzzle Began
Every big idea starts with one tiny piece. The design process began with deep research into childhood stress and digital distraction.
Identified Gap
Childhood stress and digital distractions are rising and underserved.
Solution Direction
Playful, AI powered emotional understanding through color and play.
LXD Goal
Turn digital chaos into calm balance using empathetic design as a bridge.
Learner Personas: Not Rules, but Needs
Children are not problems to solve they have fundamental needs. Three personas shaped the entire learning experience design.
Ro : Needs Choice
Autonomy and self-direction are essential. Modular activity cards give Ro control over his learning journey.
Aisha : Needs to Be Heard
Reflective check-ins and emotional avatars give Aisha a voice within the digital learning ecosystem.
Ethan : Needs Own Space
Quiet corner passes and personalized learning journeys respect Ethan's need for calm and autonomy.
Competitive Audit
Why Existing Solutions Failed
Too strict. Too adult. Too cold. Existing apps lacked playful, empathetic design.

Competitive Audit Findings
  • Screen time limiters feel punitive, not empowering.
  • Mindfulness apps use adult language and abstract concepts.
  • No existing tool combines color, play, and emotional scaffolding.

Vivomind succeeded with color, curiosity, and compassion.
The Design Process
LXD Workflow: From Research to Solution
Vivomind was designed using a full Learning Experience Design process from synthesis to iteration.
Each phase was grounded in real child feedback, ensuring cognitive accessibility and emotional relevance at every step.
Co-Design
Learning Experience Design Integration

To explore more interactive and reflective educational experiences, portions of Vivomind were structured using branching learning concepts inspired by modern eLearning systems and scenario-based instructional design workflows.
The project explored:
  • guided reflection flows,
  • learner decision pathways,
  • emotionally adaptive interactions,
  • and AI-assisted educational engagement patterns designed to encourage active participation rather than passive consumption.
Card Sorting & Information Architecture
Card Sorting & Information Architecture
Open Sorting
Mood selection, activity flow, reward delivery mapped by children.
Closed Sorting
Color palettes, breath timing, and screen limits refined by feedback.
Parent View
Begin → Set Rules → End. Simple, accountable, supportive.
Paper Prototyping
Learning Through Iteration
Tangible paper prototypes tested with real children for cognitive accessibility.
Testing sessions revealed friction points in the guided onboarding flow.
Continuous iteration based on learner behavior and emotional response.
Craft Ideas
User Feedback
Refine & Improve
Before & After: Iterative Refinement
Small changes. Big impact. Layout redesign and dark mode added based on child feedback.
Before
Radio buttons, cluttered layout, low visual hierarchy high cognitive load for young learners.
After
Dropdowns, toggle switches, clear navigation — reduced cognitive overload, improved learner engagement.

"Changed selection layout" + "Polished bottom bar" small UI shifts with measurable impact on task completion.
